Growing up, I've always wanted a pet something. I wasn't allowed a dog so i chose the next best things. I've had a parrot, lots of boring fish, a turtle at some point and even a pet worm. Now, the problem with these pets are that they are largely emotionally unfulfilling.

1) So, why a cat?
I always thought of myself as a dog person - but limitations for me - it would be nicer if you could have open space or a kennel outside, few breeds like Labradors are happy in a flat.
But you need to take them out regularly for their business while cats can be toilet trained to use the litter box at home.
They need a lot more time and loving unlike a cat which usually stops being needy and start ordering you around as it gets older.

2) How to gift someone a cat?
DON'T. A cat or any animal is a responsibility. Although a kitten looks heart breakingly cute in a little fluffy ribbon strategically placed in a basket, it requires a lot of care, future planning and attention and should not be given to someone as an impulse decision.
What you could do however, is inform the person that you wish to gift them a kitten and take an informed decision together regarding the kitten to be adopted.
3) What cat should you adopt?
I know there are a lot of marvellous pedigree cats you can buy but it would be nice if you could think about adopting from your local pound. There are also many online sites and forums where you can find out about stray kittens that need a home. I've adopted a stray kitten myself. But again, that is a personal decision.
Cats shed a lot of hair so keep that in mind while choosing. Also it's a suggestion that if you are new to cats, you could adopt a kitten as you can both grow together and understand each other better.
As a first timer, it may be difficult to understand or take care of an older cat, but if you are determined to do that, go ahead.

4) How do you toilet train them?
Well, you could start out with newspapers for little kittens. And show them where the litter box is. Cats tend to naturally take to using the litter box. Mine started using it in two days.
5) What do you feed them?
Kittens require special kitten food after which you can give regular cat food as they get older. You can ask your local vet for the best options. However, cats do tend to get addicted to packaged cat food. So you could also probably try natural fresh food.
6) When should i take my kitten to the vet?
It would be advisable to take your kitten to your local vet as soon as possible for a check up and inoculations.
